Boy Scouts on a roll to fill local need for toiletries

Evan Bauman is on a roll. Actually, Evan, 13, along with his 49 fellow Boy Scouts in Troop 172, is on at least toilet tissue roll number 1,535 in a drive that was spurred by his concern about a local need. The Scouts last week delivered about 900 rolls of toilet paper to Interfaith Emergency Services — roughly a two-week supply for those visiting the agency in need of goods and services — and another load of 635 rolls this week. The idea was sparked after Evan, a seventh-grader at Fort King Middle School, saw a television program highlighting how kids needing food can get it with food stamps, but not items like toilet paper and soap. Evan became aware of the need for toiletries at Interfaith when his family, including mother Deanne and father Rich, visited the agency’s warehouse to drop off food collected by his sister, Sydney, 9. Sydney, a third-grader at Wards-Highland Elementary, was inspired to help those in need and collected about 200 pounds of food during an Easter drive at her school. Interfaith volunteer coordinator Nita Nelson said the agency was completely out of toilet paper just before Troop 172 made their first delivery a week ago. “It was a blessing,” she said. Interfaith office manager Sonya Tyler said the agency helps 50 to 75 families a day with food, clothing and toiletries. Tyler confirmed that food stamps do not cover personal care items such as toilet paper, toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap and shampoo. http://www.ocala.com/article/20120522/ARTICLES/120529905

just goes to show that even the young have hearts of gold collecting toilet paper for those that need it the most
